I'm Delmarie Alvarez, founder of Hope-For-ADHD.com and author of Passage to Freedom: The Key To Unlocking The Gifts Behind ADD/ADHD. My goal is to provide children, adults, families, and professionals a fresh and hopeful perspective on how to embrace, manage, and excel with ADD ADHD without mind altering medication.
In my experiences as a social worker/evaluator of children with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome, developmental delays (speech and physical) and many more, I have developed a profound love and interest in helping the individual and their families find hope in their lives.
An overwhelmingly large number of parents have brought up the question as to whether or not their child is exhibiting characteristics or symptoms of ADD/ADHD and if so, what can be done to "fix" the "problem", what treatments are available and will it ever go away?
Parents and loved ones complain about their daily power struggles, the frustration they feel when their child?s behavior is uncontrollable or hard to manage. Parents begin questioning their parenting skills and do not know where to begin to find help for their child. This led me to pursue further research on ADD/ADHD.
What I found, much to my surprise, was ADD/ADHD is not the negative, uncontrollable, and frustrating disability many of us have been taught to believe. On the contrary, it is a brilliant and creative gene that has been passed on to many as a gift but has not been used to its fullest potential.
The truth is, every child and adult with ADD/ADHD has talents and skills buried within them that they are not using to their fullest capacity.
I have also learned many adults are now discovering they too have ADD/ADHD but have spent most of their lives suppressing it and feeling ashamed instead of accepting who they are and taking control.
The truth is our society has a tainted and harsh view about what is "normal" in our culture, and believing ADD/ADHD is a disorder allows our society to continue to define individuals that are highly creative and think differently as handicapped or disabled.
You see...having ADD/ADHD is not the problem; the problem is not knowing what it is and not knowing how to make it work for you.
I have made it my responsibility and obligation to inform, educate, and help either the individual with ADD/ADHD or his/her loved ones by giving them the knowledge and tools to no longer fear life but Begin the Passage to Freedom.
