Larry Allen Is Gone, What Does It Mean?

Larry Allen was cut today by the Dallas Cowboys. This news isn't too much of a surprise since he was owed a sizeable roster bonus on April 1. This moved saved the Cowboys about 3.55 million in cap space. There is an outside chance he will re-sign with Dallas, but it would have made more sense to just re-structure his deal.

I'm not a big fan of this move at all. I know he was going to count seven million against this years cap, but who cares. We have tons of cap space and we are probably about done in free agency other than maybe one or two more players. I don't understand why you wouldn't use him for one more year; then cut him.

This move kills our awesome depth we had at guard. Kosier is a good, quality starter, but just like last year there is little depth after him and Rivera. Gurode is decent, but he is our only center so Parcells doesn't want him playing tons of guard. The jury is stiil out on Peterman. The main reason I hate this move is that it decreases our flexibility on draft day, by adding another nearly must draft position. Guard is probably now 3rd on my must have list behind FS and NT. I hope Bill and Jerry know what they're doing. I hope we can re-sign Larry to a new contract, cap-friendlier contract. He isn't near the player he was, but he is still one of the better guards in this league. I really hope Rivera can return to form because we will need him to anchor the interior line without Allen.

If you have been paying attention the last few years, note that every offensive lineman that Parcells has brought in has been a smaller, more athletic guys who aren't extremely talented, but are good at playing as a unit. He doesn't seem to like the physically dominating lineman like an Allen who doesn't work very hard and just gets by on ability. As we stand, other than Adams all our offensive lineman projected starter are less than 315 pounds. Just something to mull over.UPDATE: The 49ers just signed Larry Allen to a two year deal worth between 8 & 10 million. Oh well, thanks for the memories Larry.
